Swedish steelmaker SSAB, mining major LKAB and power giant Vattenfall have started pilot production of the world's first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron as part of the HYBRIT project. Around 100 t of fossil-free sponge iron has been produced at the Lulea plant in Sweden, LKAB informed in a recent statement. The project aims to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from the steelmaking process by using fossil-free feedstock. The first demonstration plant for the production of 1.3 mn t of fossil-free sponge iron is expected to be ready by 2026.
